Hannah, a varsity member of the Newton South High School debate team, sees debating as more than speaking. As a first generation child of Vietnamese refugees, communication is key in her life at home and school, recognizing how the world perceives her and her family.

Not a lot of people on the team, like the Newton South debate team, know this about me, that like, you know, my parents were refugees after the Vietnam War.
Like, my dad went to college at the age of 33.
And growing up, like, seeing people blatantly discriminating against my parents just because they had an accent, that just really angered me 'cause I knew how captivating they were in their native tongue.
I really value the ability to express my thoughts and talk about the things that matter to me because of my parents' experiences.
(dog barks) Being able to speak and to communicate is almost like a privilege to me.
